What is Kazola's Treetop Keg and Winery?
Kazola's Treetop Keg and Winery is a player-run establishment in the massively multiplayer online game Ultima Online. It is located on the Great Lakes shard, just east of the Yew moongate in the Felucca facet. You can view a map of its location here.

Also known as Kazola's Tavern, it has been a popular gathering place for many of Great Lakes' players, and will be celebrating its fourth anniversary this March. The tavern has been host to a great many quests, adventures, parties, and other events in its rich history, and will continue to do so in the years ahead.

Who is Kazola?

Kazola is the founder and owner of Kazola's Treetop Keg and Winery. She is a citizen of Yew and has lived there her entire life. In the fledgling days of the first Yew town government, she decided to open a tavern where Yew's citizens could relax over a cup of ale and tell of their adventures. The rest is history. (See Memories for more information on the Tavern's history.)

Kazola is an accomplished mage, and also enjoys swordplay at times. She prefers to assist others while adventuring rather than leap to the forefront of battle. In the past, she has been a member of the guilds Yew Rangers, the Order of St. Mark, Holy Cross Defenders, and Cove Merchants' Guild. She is currently head of Friends of Kazola's Tavern, a group which any regular patron of the Tavern may join.

Why is it called the Treetop Keg and Winery? It's not in a tree!
Kazola named the tavern the Treetop Keg and Winery after the inspiring Yew tree that leans against its eastern wall. Before Minax's armies destroyed and fouled the original Britannian lands of Felucca, the Yew tree's branches and leaves gave the tavern a distinctive look, almost as if it were in a tree.
What are the Rules of the Tavern?

1) No fighting, stealing, or other aggressive acts inside the Tavern for any reason (unless for a pre-approved quest event). Those who do so will be asked to take it outside; if it continues, they will be removed forcefully, or even banned from the Tavern if necessary.

2) Snooping and casting magic spells are tentatively allowed, as long as the other patrons of the Tavern do not mind. If anyone requests you to stop, please do so.

3) Treat all visitors and Staff at the Tavern with respect. This includes Murderers and Thieves who visit with peaceful intentions and who follow the Tavern Rules.

4) Use of foul language is strongly frowned upon. Please remember that patrons of all ages visit the Tavern, and that Ultima Online carries a "Teen" rating.

5) Please follow all requests of any of the Tavern's Staff. (The current Staff can be found by clicking Staff on the left-side menubar.)

When is a good time to visit the Tavern?
Currently, the Tavern hosts a "Happy Hour" every Wednesday evening, starting at 8pm Central Time, and ending when the last person leaves, usually at midnight or later. Other events will soon follow, and will be added to the Events section of this site.
Why is this place decorated with hedges, a fireplace, etc.? How can I get these for my home?
Years ago, Origin decided to recognize popular player-run establishments by what players popularly refer to as "blessing". This involved the Seer program as well; Seers would visit popular establishments, and if these establishments fulfilled various criteria, would offer to sponsor these places. The places would then be decorated, and items in the building would be locked down. Kazola's Tavern was the first such recognized establishment on Great Lakes, and the second in all the shards. (Silk's Tavern on Lake Superior was the first.) Many other places on Great Lakes also became "blessed": the Cove Merchants' Guild outside Cove, Red Devil's Auction House, and the Temple of Mondain are some examples of these.

At the time when Kazola's Tavern first opened, "blessings" were greatly needed, as furniture originally could not be locked down, and houses could easily be robbed. As time passed however, UO's designers created many tools to assist players with running their establishments, such as the ability to lock down furniture and other items, removing and banning deviant players from homes, adding secure containers, and new craftable items to help decorate buildings. They continue to add new items and tools, enabling every Ultima Online player to have a beautiful, secure, and unique home.

Because of all these additions, and the removal of the Volunteer programs, OSI will no longer sponsor or "bless" player-run establishments. The existing establishments were permitted to remain, as they are a rich part of Ultima Online's history.

Did Lord British really visit the Tavern?

If you visit the tavern, you will notice two plaques on the western wall in the main room. These plaques were indeed placed by Lord British himself while visiting during the Tavern's first anniversary celebration. Although Lord British no longer rules the lands of Britannia, we will always be honored by his visit and remember him with reverence.
